Natural thermometers (DEANJ14DTP)

Institution: John Innes Centre

Description: This student will investigate measurement of long term temperature exposure through the study of the plant developmental repressor FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC). FLC is regulated by multiple pathways, independently regulated by temperature, which converge to regulate FLC via aspects of a regulatory involving antisense transcripts and different chromatin pathways. (…) This work will provide unique insight into how the combinatorial effect of different thermo-sensors in natural environments leads to changes in gene expression.

Molecular Evolution of Host-Specificity in a Plant Pathogen

  • Research Area Food Security
  • Partner The John Innes Centre (JIC)
  • Supervisor Professor James Brown – james.brown@jic.ac.uk

Description: Investigate the molecular evolution of an economically important fungal pathogen in order to understand how it has become a destructive parasite. The study organism is Blumeria graminis, the Ascomycete fungus which causes powdery mildew, a damaging disease of cereal crops and forage grasses. The project will combine research in molecular evolution with plant pathology and applicants with a specialist interest in either area can be considered.
